The craft

A very old way of decorating a room.

Plaster mouldings are ornament made from gypsum, a mineral burnt in a kiln to produce Plaster of Paris. The fashion came from the Ancient Greeks: rooms were decorated after the Greek orders of architecture, and cornicing, friezes and skirting have all at times been made in plaster.

The process is also called fibrous plastering, and it has been used in building for centuries. Fibrous plaster was used even by the ancient Egyptians: it has been found in their coffins.

I am absolutely over the moon with the work carried out by the cornice fitter Dennis. He completed several rooms in my house, and the workmanship is outstanding. The attention to detail and quality of the finish exceeded my expectations. He is a true master of his craft, professional, reliable, and clearly takes great pride in his work. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for high-quality cornice work and will definitely be inviting him back to do more work in my home in the future.

I can highly recommend Dennis, he has done a few jobs in a few different rooms, adding plaster cornice and a ceiling rose to one room, repairs to original cornice and adding Victorian style cornice to another room. He’s very friendly always on time and does a fantastic job
Michelle Marshall, August 2025
Dennis did a great job matching the original cornice to replace a section missing in our living room. Very friendly and offered to do the job at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.
Richard Ross, February 2024
Dennis provided a (very reasonable) estimate to repair damage to a large piece of decorative ceiling moulding that had fallen down. He came back when he said he would to undertake the repair and he and his assistant completed the work to an excellent standard quickly and without fuss. Dennis was very friendly, knowledgeable and reliable and I would give him and his team the highest recommendation.
Maria Bannister, October 2020
